“Cakes are done, but people are finished.”蛋糕吃完了。人吃完了蛋糕。

在英语国家，这句话经常被拿来解释done和finished两个词的区别。

大致意思是，完成的事情要用done，完成了事情的人要用finished。（注意，此处的done和finished都是形容词，表示“完成的”，而非过去分词。）

同样可以译为结束的两个词到底有什么不同呢？

这就要追溯到18世纪初。

He is finished with all of his work, because he has done each of his projects.

他把他的工作完成了，因为他把每个项目都做好了。

在表示完成一件任务时，done有时会稍带贬义。如果结果不尽人意，一般都会用I'm done而不是I'm finished。

I think I am done for now.

我认为我目前做得差不多了。

烹饪的时候，人们会用叉子插一插锅里的肉，看看熟了没。爱开玩笑的人就用这句话来表示完成了很艰难的工作，累得不行了……
